Croydon is the largest office centre in the South East outside central London, and that drives the local jobs market. The cluster of towers around East Croydon station and Wellesley Road holds most of the white-collar work. The Home Office runs a government hub at Ruskin Square, employing several thousand staff after moving out of the older Lunar and Apollo House blocks in 2024, and HMRC also occupies offices at Ruskin Square. Engineering and consultancy firms Mott MacDonald, whose global head office is on Sydenham Road, and AECOM are long established, and insurer Allianz Partners has a base on George Street near East Croydon. Superdrug runs its head office from 51 Sydenham Road in the town centre. Live vacancies lean towards admin, customer service, finance, insurance and professional services, alongside retail and care work.

Away from the office towers, Purley Way is a long strip of retail parks and warehousing running south-west towards Waddon. IKEA at Valley Park (CR0 4UZ) sits alongside Currys, B&Q, DFS and other big-box retailers, generating regular retail, warehouse and driving roles. Closer to East Croydon station, Boxpark fills hospitality shifts. Recruitment agencies cover much of the office and contact-centre hiring, and a large share of the call-centre and temp roles are placed through agencies rather than advertised directly.

East Croydon sits on the Brighton Main Line: London Bridge in around 13 to 15 minutes, Victoria in 16, Gatwick Airport in about 14, plus Thameslink direct to St Pancras and Luton. The Tramlink network runs west to Wimbledon and east to Beckenham Junction, Elmers End and New Addington, with Ampere Way serving the Purley Way retail parks. Postcodes: CR0 covers the town centre, East Croydon and Waddon; CR2 is South Croydon and Sanderstead. There is no CR1, as the district was never issued.
