Canary Wharf is a financial district built on the old West India Docks on the Isle of Dogs, covering a 128-acre estate where roughly 120,000 people work on a weekday. Most of the work is white-collar finance and the services attached to it: banking, asset management, insurance, compliance and risk, legal, accountancy, plus the retail, security, facilities and hospitality jobs that run the estate. Vacancies lean towards experienced professionals, though there is a steady flow of front-of-house, retail and contract roles.

The anchor employers are the banks. Barclays has its global headquarters at One Churchill Place and has extended its lease there to 2039. Citigroup owns 25 and 33 Canada Square, and is currently based in 33 Canada Square while 25 undergoes a major refurbishment due to reopen in 2026. HSBC remains at 8 Canada Square (E14 5HQ) until its lease ends in 2027, when it moves to Panorama St Paul's in the City. JPMorgan has a long-standing presence and has set out plans for a large new headquarters tower on its Riverside South site by the water, designed for up to 12,000 staff. Beyond the banks, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) employs a sizeable civil-service workforce at 10 South Colonnade (E14 4PU), and a life-sciences cluster is forming around Wood Wharf. The malls — Cabot Place, Jubilee Place and the Crossrail Place levels — hold hundreds of retail and food roles.

A lot of recruitment runs through agencies rather than direct hiring, particularly for contract, temp and specialist finance work, so registering with the firms that staff the Wharf is worth doing alongside applying direct. Transport is a strong point: the Elizabeth line reaches Liverpool Street in about seven minutes and Bond Street in roughly fourteen, the Jubilee line reaches Green Park in about thirteen, and the DLR connects the rest of Docklands. The estate sits in the E14 postcode district.
