Design Manager

Design Manager / Architect – Healthcare
Location: London
We are seeking an experienced Design Manager / Architect to join a well-established contractor, supporting the successful delivery of large healthcare projects across London.
The ideal candidate will have previous experience working on healthcare projects and will have a strong understanding of the specific design, technical, regulatory, and stakeholder requirements associated with healthcare environments.
Candidates with experience as a Lead Consultant, Lead Designer, Design Manager, Architect, or similar will be considered, provided they have a strong understanding of both design delivery and wider project management.
Key Responsibilities
Lead and manage the design process from pre-construction through to completion on healthcare projects.
Coordinate architects, consultants, engineers, subcontractors, specialist designers, and project stakeholders.
Manage design programmes, Design Responsibility Matrices, information release schedules, and technical deliverables.
Ensure designs are fully coordinated, compliant, buildable, and delivered in line with programme and project requirements.
Work closely with the Senior Project Manager, Project Director, client, and wider project team.
Lead design meetings, design reviews, workshops, and multidisciplinary coordination activities.
Manage design changes, RFIs, variations, risks, and technical issues throughout the project lifecycle.
Support tendering, value engineering, procurement, and commercial activities.
Ensure healthcare-specific design requirements, standards, regulations, and client requirements are incorporated into the design.
Maintain strong relationships with clients, consultants, healthcare stakeholders, and project teams.
Ensure design and construction quality, health & safety, compliance, and regulatory requirements are maintained throughout the project.
Support the successful handover of projects, ensuring all design and technical information is complete and compliant.
Experience & Skills
Relevant qualification in Architecture, Design, Construction, Engineering, or a related discipline.
Previous experience delivering healthcare projects is essential.
Proven experience in a Design Manager, Architect, Lead Designer, Lead Consultant, or similar role.
Strong Design & Build project experience.
Good understanding of the specific design and delivery requirements associated with healthcare environments.
Comprehensive understanding of project management, programme, procurement, commercial, risk, and construction delivery.
Strong leadership, coordination, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
Good understanding of buildability, construction processes, technical design, and multidisciplinary coordination.
Strong IT skills, including Microsoft Office.
Ability to manage multiple priorities and work effectively within a fast-paced project environment.
Desirable
Previous experience working for a main contractor or D&B contractor.
Experience delivering healthcare projects within London.
Experience working on complex or live healthcare environments, including refurbishment, fit-out, or new-build projects.
Knowledge of BIM and digital design processes.
Experience with Revit, Navisworks, Viewpoint, or similar CDE platforms.
Experience managing multidisciplinary design teams and specialist subcontractor design.
Understanding of relevant healthcare design standards, guidance, and compliance requirements.
